Disability Led Innovation: A Situated and Collaborative Practice

Disabled people have long contributed to design with everyday life inventions and hacks. From the invention of audiobooks to tailor-made gaming controllers and web design that adapts to the diverse ways of being and perceiving the world.  In this talk we present examples of disability-led innovations and issues with the lack of disability-expertise in design processes. We outline recommendations for designers and hackers emphasizing the importance of relational forms of access, the work of maintenance, collaboration, context of use, and inclusive design.

Cathrine Mejdal is an accessibility specialist and founder of Mejdal Consulting, in which she advises companies and cultural institutions on accessibility issues, crip belonging and diversity. She holds a master in cultural communication and has studied Deaf Culture at the world’s only university for the Deaf in USA and is passionate about understanding how one can achieve the elusive diversity bonus through cultural collaboration. She is born profoundly deaf and uses sign language (preferably Danish or American). She has a love for hiking and cultural travels and books on literally anything but true crime.

The three challenges will be elaborated on, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
